Availability of Physician Services in New Jersey - 2006 Update

CSHP will develop updated estimates of the supply of physicians in New Jersey by specialty for the NJ Department of Banking and Insurance. This work builds on an earlier project in which CSHP provided physician supply analysis for 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Information from lists of licensed physicians from the NJ Board of Medical Examiners will be merged with specialty, activity (i.e. active, retired, etc.) and primary practice location information from the American Medical Association's Physician Masterfile to measure the supply of physicians. For each specialty, physician supply information will be analyzed as a ratio to the potential patient population and over time and compared to national ratios and published benchmarks to determine which specialties and counties may be experiencing physician access problems. In addition, CSHP will update its review of methods for benchmarking physician access problems.
